Defend The Road

I stand on the side of the road. For she has stood for me, stood for Freedom, for choices, for opportunities un-bounded. Of course, she stands for interruptions as well. Dead ends; roads closed; terminus and for some she is the end of all things before her. The end of a journey; the end of a life; the end of a generation of prosperity. As I stand on the black tar in the hot desert, the orange glow of the sun casting my shadow across the glimmering mirage that dissects her never-ending sprawl across the sand, I can’t help but feel lost. Evacuated from time and space. I don’t know if the sun is rising or setting. There are no clues but my own presence observing the history of her procession across this place. I fall to my knees as if to pray, kiss the hot gravel and feel the surge of every road I’ve ever taken — After hours of driving through the Rockies we reached the end with a washed out road and had to turn back the way we came. The miles of road we travelled all night from Walla Walla to Las Vegas on the bus, the city a beacon of light shining out of the desolate night. Trading cigarettes for whiskey with a Navajo man at 6am when I wasn’t old enough to have breakfast in the casino back in the days before anyone cared that you weren’t old enough to be in the casino buying breakfast and pulling slots. The long drives from Prescott to Oklahoma along I-40 (aka Rt. 66), Albuquerque being the mid-point where I always remembered the dancing cottonwood leaves shining behind the bridge as we pressed on for Texas. The back and forth between Lansing and Louisville via Indianapolis or Cincinnati where the highways were pulmonary arteries throbbing with American life. All of this pavement laid down over the bones of those whose land this once was. So many forgotten dreams of the dead who got in the way of the road’s progress. So much progress fallen under the knee of authority that presses faces into pavement until they can’t breathe because they believe this black road must be painted with white dividing lines. These bypasses that left behind and isolated these segregated communities who now struggle and cry for the American dream that was paved to make way for Amazon and the next off-ramp to the nearest Wal*Mart. And, yet I must defend her. She has given me so many choices; taken me time and again into the beauty of our mountains and forests. She has driven my dreams of change and fueled my ambitions to do something bigger with my life. She has done nothing to us or for us, yet she lets us be good or bad or something or no one. She is my friend and my lover and I must forgive her abuses by the hands of the unworthy. I must revel in her possibility to bring dreams into the night of our awakening dawn.

It’s never too late for Love

It’s never too late for Love.

Even in our life’s winter
There is time to find
A partner to share the warmth.
No clock can count
The tides of Longing.
No ocean can quench
The thirst for companionship.

No, it’s never too late for Love.

The dawn is alive with
Songs of Love Birds
Calling that spring has come.
To find yet another day
For those in search of
A partner to share
Another night without
Solitude, another
Sunset that delights.

No, it’s never too late for Love.

So, as you find yourselves
In Love, it does not
Matter why or how —
Cherish this day
To Celebrate your Wedding,
This union, this moment,
This Love you’ve found.

Mimesis — Nemesis

Challenging your Philosopher Kings
Our Flights of fancy are presently
Bound to corrupt your perfectly
Crafted warrior spirits

And so easily deceived
These rulers you have gently
Coaxed and coddled through education
Yet admitting we all are too dumb for your nation

My lovely metre and flourishing words
Can outflank your wisdom, ursurp with absurd
Dazzling lies to corrupt and
Negate this learning you’ve planned

While my carbon copy of reality
Corners and craters your philosophy
You think it better I just leave
And not bother your wisdom with creativity.

Your Mimesis Nemesis
I will dismiss
Your plots and plans
With mere language

Say what?

What will I have to say?
When they have taken my tongue away
Cut out for the greater good
Silenced by my absence of breath?
They cried revolution
Only to be struck down
With complacency…

What will–?

Guardian
Never to know
The pleasures of
The Arts

What do you
Protect except
For your place and
Your part?

Some great scheme
Of society
Never to be
Questioned

Raised to rule
To kill for
A promise
Unfulfilled

As the Citizens
You’re made to protect
Rebel as they try
To freely express

Banished at the gate
Never allowed to relate
Their tales which
Have been judged by the keepers

And what if your
Guardian raised true
Were to pick up your lyre
And sing your heart’s desires?

No Freedom for the programmed to do…
No art for the philosopher to pursue…

“Not to copy nature” says WCW

Is it true
What WCW
Says about nature?

That to copy
It is
Shameful?

Is it shameful
To replicate
The bird’s song?

A perfect
Rhythm that
Dances along

And for generations
Has embellished
Their species

Is it imitation
You are after
To emulate not replicate?

I thought you
Were the
Poet

Seeking after
The Laureate
Admiration of your fellows?

If not a
Song writer
You seek to be?

Then how much
Trouble really
Is the song that’s Free?

Straight from the Sparrow’s mouth
It carries through the morning
And out unto the world

Awaiting your lyrical definition
No need to mention
That your tune

Came from the trees
Or just how soon
Its origins fade from memory?

No, not me
I am thankful for
The songs of nature

I’ll copy more of
Those perfect beats
Laid cross the morning dews

They speak to you
You know
They do

So carry their tune
With you
Across the page

For one day
When you’re old and played
You will thank them for the music that they gave unto you!

Was Coleridge Too Simple?

So simple, this theme
Of morning and spring
The full moon sets
As the falcons sing
A day beginning
With promise
Gathering
Upon the shadows of horizons
The sun to bring
Warmth to the new day
As the cold moon wanes
Nature’s ritual
As the seasons change
Returning the life
The rhythm
The song
To stick in our throats
To be hummed
All day long
This celebration
Of the simplest of things
This confirmation
of the season of growing

Naked

If I were not left to stand naked here
Stripped head to toe, not much to stare
Upon in the shadows of this exposing hour
Nowhere to run, no, no protective tower

Could I stand myself or you of me?
Exposed to the core; no more reverie
To drift these moments of folly
And pass the time content and jolly?

No, this dark hour has left me here
In the open, alone and full of fear
I cannot beckon, who would I call?
To stand by my side, naked and all?

For at my center, the liar sits
He’s taken control and silenced my fits
He conjures my dreams and calls forth my ghosts
He will not relent until I’m fully un-clothed

Not for the moment that I long to be
Composed, quite clothed, protected fully
By this will to be the man who I am
When I’ve yielded to God, my own judgements be damned!

First I must let go of these illusions of control
Un-bind my demons and embrace my ghosts
The light there waiting for me to take up new clothes
And stand with aspirations of the life I’ll compose

For this is a journey taken one step at a time
The trauma, the pain, takes time to unwind
We can’t blame ourselves for mistakes that we’ve made
All is forgiven when we ourselves face the day

But forgiving yourself is the first step to take
Only then can you begin your healing to make
This person is longing to be set free
No longer naked, now standing proudly.

epilogue
I write this poem still naked myself
No longer do I care what the others will shout
My exposure is mine and I have no doubt
This day is mine and in the light I will sprout!

Choice Family

We step into the past — by choice
Out into
the woods
Away from signals
of society
that keep us
pinned into
Frameworks of consumption.
Out here there is Nothing
but each other
and often
we can’t stand
Each
Other!
Though we love deeply
These
Others who
We share our lives with
by choice or
by birth
You don’t choose your family
only mother and father
have that privilege.
Everyone else
must deal with that choice.
Yet brothers and sisters — siblings
May be the only ones
Who care
when all else
has gone…

I must be in the right place

The blue screen won’t load
The news is old
The fire is hot
The coffee is cold

I must be in the right place

The wind whistles through the trees
The air wheezes as I breathe
The dirt is dirty with blackest soot
The trees have fallen exposing roots

I must be in the right place

I am in the write place
With time to think
And craft this space
With smoke in my eyes there’s time to blink

I must be in the right place

With many miles and tires worn
My skin the sun seeks to absorb
The camp is set, the children fed
No fingers, smashed, no nothing bled

I must be in the right place
